B1

Formation

-ar → -e, -es, -e… · -er/-ir → -a, -as, -a… · querer que / ojalá + subjuntivo

Explanation

The subjunctive is a mood for wishes, doubts and emotions rather than facts. Form it by swapping the vowel of the present: -ar verbs take -e endings (hable, hables, hable, hablemos, habléis, hablen) and -er/-ir take -a (coma, comas…). Use it after a wish with a change of subject: Quiero que vengas (I want you to come), and after ojalá (I hope): Ojalá haga sol. If the subject doesn't change, use the infinitive: Quiero venir.

Examples

Quiero que vengas a la fiesta.
I want you to come to the party.
Ojalá haga buen tiempo mañana.
I hope the weather is good tomorrow.

Note

Irregular present indicatives carry over: tener → tenga, hacer → haga, ir → vaya, ser → sea.
